if we could hear you now 16mm film projection if we could hear you now is a 16mm mute film shown in a loop. A young woman’s face is framed in the screen. Her face is urban and contemporary, and her lips, painted red, are moving. She is trying to tell us something, but we cannot hear her in the silent film. In an increasingly fast-paced edit, the image of the woman is interweaved with footage of ice. The imperfections of her make-up mirror the cracks in the icebergs. The woman continues with her message, and a flickering after-image of her face remains visible through the many cuts in the film. After reaching an almost stroboscopic speed, the camera lingers briefly on the woman’s face, and we finally look into her eyes for the first time. |
